Are poetry house parties even a thing?
Absolutely! They offer a place for people who prefer not to go to pubs, open mics, or anything outdoors over weekends. (at the same time, I’m someone who love both - poetry and pubs)
Let me share a story.
I wrote my first poem while traveling to Bhopal for college admissions.
In 3-4 months, I attended a lot of literature events, workshops, film festivals, open mics and what not.
Poetry house parties started when Husain reached out to me in 2017. At that time, I was volunteering, and still do, with GIFLIF, the largest and first literature and film festival in central India.
He asked if I would like to volunteer for poetry house parties. I instantly loved the idea because it was different from open mics. At open mics, people often use their phones or eat while someone is performing. At house parties, you get everyone's full attention.
To date, I’ve hosted over 50 of these house parties as a city lead volunteer, and I have no plans to stop being involved in poetry.
Just yesterday, I met a lieutenant in the Indian army who is an excellent poet, an HR professional who DJs on weekends, and a woman who writes incredible poetry and can sing it beautifully without any autotune.
Do we ever really know who we are throughout our lives?
Right now, as I sit in a cubicle writing this, I recall removing fairy lights after an event when someone approached me. They thanked me for the event and mentioned how the warm surroundings allowed them to speak their heart out.
I feel blessed to be part of this.
