A career update. And a (slightly) long read!
Opportunity doesn't knock twice, they say. Let me start this week off by telling you that it, most definitely, does. And will. If you are open to saying yes!
Earlier this year, right when I was getting comfortable with the roller coaster ride that HighRadius was, Reshma from Zoho reached out to me with a really exciting opportunity - to launch a new product within the Zoho Finance suite for Enterprises. It took little to no convincing to get me to pack my bags and move to Chennai. The leadership at Zoho Finance were warm and welcoming. And so was the city. Making me feel at home, away from home. You see, this was my first time working outside Hyderabad. I was excited! I planted my heels, rolled up my sleeves, and got to business.
Right when I was thinking about buying more pots and plants, Darwinbox reached out to me. Being a home-grown unicorn, I always had aspired to work with Darwinbox. But there never was a right time, or the right role. Until now, that is. A few (extremely open, and honest) conversations later, I was back to house hunting in Hyderabad!
How I got lucky twice this year, I would never know! But here are some of the things that I think helped me.
1. When you are looking for the 'next move', be clear about everything you want your job to be. Think about what is important to you - the kind of work you want to do, how you want to feel about your job, the type of company you want to work for, the kind of people you want to work with, the kind of learnings or skills you want this job to help you with.. everything. Knowing what you want helps in having the right conversations.
2. Be honest and open with your hiring managers from the get-go. Lay out all your cards on the table. Hiring is a very tedious process. Some of these leaders take months to close a single position. They deserve nothing short of your most honest self. Have the difficult conversations. Be upfront about what it is that you are looking for from this opportunity (refer to #1). And what you are bringing to the table in exchange.
3. And when you do finally have the offer on the table, say yes! Everything else is going to fall into place.
I am deeply humbled and grateful for the opportunities that have come my way this year. I am just over a month into my new role at Darwinbox, and I love it! Homecoming, in the truest sense!
Thank you Gowthami, and Samrat for everything! I couldn't have asked for more, even if I tried.
More on what we are building at Darwinbox in my next post!
